James Doohan Has Passed Away
Actor James Doohan has passed away at age 85.
What an amazing life to have led, from the beaches of Normandy to the limits of human imagination about a bright future.
One thing about him I remember was when he recounted when he got his Honorary Ph.D. in Engineering from MIT. James protested to the Dean of the College of Engineering that he did not deserve it, he had not invented anything and was not even that handy.
The Dean took him over to the edge of the stage that James would be presenting the keynote address from and pointed out at the crowd of new engineers - all of them giddy as they were finally graduating and they were finally getting a chance to meet James Doohan. The Dean said, "90% of those kids became engineers because they wanted to be Scotty when they grew up. You may not have invented a technology or discovered a new manufacturing process, but you inspired whole generations of young engineers who would. That is what *you* did for engineering."
Thank you, James. You will be missed by this fan and by another person who wanted to be Scotty when he grew up.
